The HGH 100 IU pen holds 3ml of solution across 300 units, so one unit on the dial equals 0.01ml. That works out at 33.33 IU/ml, or 11.10mg/ml by mass. As a worked example, 9 units is 0.09ml, containing 3.00 IU (1.00mg). Somatropin is dosed in international units; the mg figure is the same amount by mass, using the pen’s stated conversion. About the compound
Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone, a 191 amino acid single chain polypeptide with the identical sequence to the growth hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary. Rather than being extracted from human tissue, it is produced by inserting the human growth hormone gene into a host cell line (typically a strain of E. coli), which then expresses the protein at scale. The “rDNA origin” mark on the label is shorthand for this process.
Because the amino acid sequence matches endogenous hGH exactly, the recombinant protein binds the same growth hormone receptor and triggers the same downstream signalling cascades in the research literature. Two mechanisms dominate the published work: direct receptor activation across peripheral tissues, and hepatic release of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), which mediates a large portion of what is broadly labelled the “growth hormone effect”.
Research applications for somatropin span several areas. In the body composition literature it has been examined for its effects on lean mass, adipose tissue and lipolysis via the JAK-STAT and PI3K-Akt pathways. In tissue repair work, IGF-1 driven anabolic signalling has been studied in muscle, connective tissue and skin fibroblast populations. Metabolic studies have looked at glucose handling, free fatty acid mobilisation and hepatic glucose output. There is also a body of work on sleep architecture, with growth hormone secretion showing a well characterised pulse during slow wave sleep in reference subjects.
The 100 IU loading in this pen equates to 33.3mg of somatropin, using the conventional 3 IU per mg conversion. The pen is graduated so that 9 units on the dial dispenses 3 IU (roughly 1mg), giving 33 clean 9 unit draws before the pen runs dry. Sub-unit dosing is possible by dialling smaller increments and reading them off the window.
